BOAS Surgery

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome Surgery

For our squished-faced, brachycephalic friends, we provide a 5-stage airway surgery service which helps them to live an easier, better-quality life by decreasing obstructions in their airways.

A dog suffering with BOAS will generally show some of the following signs:

  • Snoring
  • Loud breathing, even at rest
  • Difficulty breathing, where you see excessive chest wall and abdominal movements rather than relaxed breathing
  • Poor tolerance to hot weather
  • Reduced ability to exercise (people often quote their dog is lazy)
  • Trouble sleeping (sleep apnoea)
  • Regurgitation, vomiting, indigestion

In this surgery we will address:

  • Everted laryngeal saccules
  • Elongated soft palates
  • Enlarged palatine tonsils
  • Stenotic nares

When done early before the progression of the syndrome and before irreversible changes occur, this will then decrease the incidence of other chronic issues such as gastro-oesophageal reflux, hiatal hernia, sleep apnoea, heat stress, collapse and death.
